Choosing a hardscape contractor is one of those decisions that doesn’t feel like it matters much — until two winters later, when a patio starts heaving or a retaining wall starts leaning. In Northeast Ohio, where freeze-thaw cycles and clay-heavy soil are unforgiving of shortcuts, the contractor you pick decides whether your outdoor space lasts for decades or needs to be redone within a few years.
Here’s what we’d tell a homeowner to look at before hiring a hardscape contractor — the same standard we hold ourselves to.
1. Ask who’s actually doing the work
Some companies sell the job and subcontract the labor to whoever’s available that month. Others, like Bedrock, train and keep their own crew of masons and artisans — which means the people designing the project are the same ones building it, and accountability doesn’t get lost in a handoff.
2. Ask what’s happening below the surface
A patio or wall is only as good as what’s underneath it. A contractor who can clearly explain their excavation, grading, and base preparation process — without you having to ask twice — is one who isn’t skipping it. If the answer is vague, that’s worth noticing.
3. Ask to see work that’s held up, not just work that’s new
Fresh installations all look good. Ask to see — or ask about — projects from 5, 10, even 15 years back. A contractor confident in their process will have examples. One that doesn’t usually hasn’t been doing this long enough to know how their work ages.
4. Ask how they handle design, not just installation
A hardscape project touches drainage, structure, and how a family will actually use the space — not just which pavers to pick. A contractor who collaborates with architects and designers, or has that expertise in-house, tends to catch problems before they’re built, not after.
5. Ask what happens if something goes wrong
Weather delays, unexpected rock or drainage issues, permit questions — these come up on real projects. How a contractor talks about problems before they happen tells you a lot about how they’ll handle one if it does.
What this looks like at Bedrock
We’ve been building hardscapes — retaining walls, patios, walkways, and outdoor living spaces — across Cleveland and Northeast Ohio since 2007, with the same core team of artisans David Wallis personally trained early on. Every project starts with a site visit, where we look at drainage, grading, and the realistic scope before anything is designed.
If you’re planning a hardscape project and want a second opinion, or just want to understand what a well-built one actually involves, schedule a site visit — or see examples of our hardscape work.
