Pavers vs. Natural Stone: Why We Build Exclusively with Natural Stone

When homeowners start researching a new patio, “pavers vs. natural stone” is one of the first things they look up. It’s a fair question — both materials show up across Cleveland, and both can look good in photos. Here’s where we land on it, and why.

Manufactured pavers

Pavers are concrete units made in a mold, in consistent sizes, colors, and patterns. They’re widely used because they’re predictable and often less expensive to source in bulk. The trade-off is that they’re manufactured, not natural — the color and texture are uniform in a way that real stone never quite replicates, and lower-tier pavers can fade or chip over time.

Natural stone

Natural stone — bluestone, sandstone, fieldstone — is quarried, not manufactured. No two pieces are identical, which is exactly what gives a patio the character and permanence that pavers can’t fully match. It’s also simply built to outlast the house it sits beside.

Why We Don’t Install Manufactured Pavers

At Bedrock Outdoor Living, we work exclusively with natural stone and brick — we don’t install manufactured concrete pavers. This is a deliberate choice, not a limitation. It reflects our commitment to craftsmanship, longevity, timeless beauty, and the health and safety of our team.

Natural stone is an investment in lasting beauty. While manufactured pavers may offer a slightly lower initial cost, they often lose their original appearance as they age, with fading colors, surface wear, and deterioration that can leave an outdoor space looking tired and dated. Natural stone, by contrast, develops character and a beautiful patina over time. Rather than looking worn out, a properly selected and installed natural stone surface can become more beautiful with age, often lasting for generations.

Our commitment also extends to the safety of our craftsmen. Cutting manufactured concrete pavers can generate significant amounts of respirable crystalline silica dust, creating health risks for installers and others in the work environment. While cutting natural stone also requires appropriate dust controls and protective measures, we prefer to minimize unnecessary exposure wherever possible.

Our craftsmen specialize in natural stonework, dry-stack and mortared masonry, and traditional installation techniques. We’ve spent decades developing the expertise and sourcing relationships necessary to bring authentic, high-quality stone to every project.

It’s a narrower focus, but one we believe produces a superior result — outdoor spaces built with genuine materials, exceptional craftsmanship, and an enduring beauty that manufactured products simply cannot replicate.

What this means for your project

If you’re set on pavers specifically, we’re not the right fit, and we’ll tell you that upfront. But if what you actually want is a patio, wall, or walkway that looks and feels authentic — and holds up through Cleveland winters for decades, not years — natural stone and brick is where we specialize.
